Having appeared for twice in GRE, I can definitely guide you to study for GRE
Its a very funny and temperament oriented exam, where you can not predict your marks after giving few mock tests.

  • If you have a nice grip in English vocabulary, and have read lot of books and novels, studying for 3 months will suffice the preparation. Still you need a study plan to keep you on track.
  • But, if your background does not include advanced English and an "avid reader" capablity, I suggest you to start a bit early.(5-6 month plan, Like coming from vernacular medium school ).
  • Read lot of stuff, solve lot of math problems and give around 10 mock tests to get ready for the final frontier.
  • Knowing just about every word will not get you a full score in Verbal. Verbal section tests your ability to read faster and grasp the overall meaning of the passage or sentence.
  • Don't be under the impression that, Quants section is very easy and I will score 170. Its a myth. I am not being harsh or intimidating you, but Quant section has become tougher. Get ready for some toughest questions which you might not have thought of.
  • Refer to the material which is the toughest and do solve Manhattan books. Manhattan 5lb is a must solve book.
  • While practicing, keep a time limit and solve the question. Its not about scratching your head and solving a sum in 5-10 mins, its about how many you got correct in a stipulated time. Accuracy is everything.
  • Regular self-study is necessary. It really depends on person to person, how much he/she should study per day. There are some study plans available on Magoosh, which you can definitely refer.
  • Revise words. Revise, redo, revise, redo. Use flashcards if you want, rather make one. Don't be overwhelmed by learning 100 new words in a day. Revise them again tomorrow. Its impossible to remember all those new words in just one visit. Review it again and again.
  • Its a four hour long test, which will test your mental as well as physical strength. Yes, it is an enervating exam.
  • Reading comprehension is the toughest part (Yes toughest!), practice it well. Understand the passage rather than finding the answer.
  • Make your own sets of commonly confused words which will prove beneficial on the day before your exam. Don't study anything on the D-day and neither in the evening the day before.
